When asked why he became a Catholic GK Chesterton would say: GK Chesterton is another of the great minds who converted from the Church of England to the Catholic tradition of faith, he joins Blessed John Henry Newman, both of whom converted in their late 40s. Chesterton describes St Francis as “a poet whose whole life was a poem.” Chesterton not only gets St Francis to speak for himself, he does it in the way the little friar would have preferred: by conveying not his words, but his life. The analysis is supportive rather than overwhelming. Firstly it contains a lot more facts and secondly his writing is straight forward and highly dramatic. GK Chesterton’s book about St Francis of Assisi is unlike any of his other biographies. Gilbert Keith Chesterton wrote approximately 80 books, 2000 essays, 200 short stories and several plays, and today he’s probably best know for the Father Brown BBC TV Series staring Mark Williams as Father Brown and Sorcha Cusack as Mrs McCarthy.

Kate Morton’s fifth novel starts with a mysterious scene that invites the reader into the story instantly. Until a young police detective starts asking questions about her family’s past, seeking to resurrect the complex tangle of secrets Alice has spent her life trying to escape. Meanwhile, in the attic writing room of her elegant Hampstead home, the formidable Alice Edevane, now an old lady, leads a life as neatly plotted as the bestselling detective novels she writes. Until one day, Sadie stumbles upon an abandoned house surrounded by overgrown gardens and dense woods, and learns the story of a baby boy who disappeared without a trace. She retreats to her beloved grandfather’s cottage in Cornwall but soon finds herself at a loose end. Seventy years later, after a particularly troubling case, Sadie Sparrow is sent on an enforced break from her job with the Metropolitan Police. But by the time midnight strikes and fireworks light up the night skies, the Edevane family will have suffered a loss so great that they leave Loeanneth forever. Not only has she worked out the perfect twist for her novel, she’s also fallen helplessly in love with someone she shouldn’t have. Alice Edevane, sixteen years old and a budding writer, is especially excited. June 1933, and the Edevane family’s country house, Loeanneth, is polished and gleaming, ready for the much-anticipated Midsummer Eve party. Others turn to Peter Rumancek, a Gypsy trailer-trash kid who has told impressionable high school classmates that he’s a werewolf. Some suspect an escapee from the White Tower, a foreboding biotech facility owned by the Godfrey family - their personal fortune and the local economy having moved on from Pittsburgh steel - where, if rumors are true, biological experiments of the most unethical kind take place. A manhunt ensues - though the authorities aren’t sure if it’s a man they should be looking for. The body of a young girl is found mangled and murdered in the woods of Hemlock Grove, Pennsylvania, in the shadow of the abandoned Godfrey Steel mill. The confession of a bewildered psychoanalytic patient thrust through life by his unappeasable sexuality yet held back by the iron grip of his unforgettable childhood, Portnoy unleashed Roth’s comic virtuosity and opened new avenues for American fiction. The publication of the hilarious Portnoy’s Complaint (1969) was a cultural event that turned Roth into a reluctant celebrity. A small-town 1940s America of restrictive social pressures and foreclosed opportunities provides the novel’s background. When She Was Good (1967) is the trenchant portrait of Lucy Nelson, a young midwestern woman whose perception of her own suffering turns her into a ferocious force, “enemy-ridden and unforgivingly defiant,” as Roth would later describe her. In this, the second volume of The Library of America’s definitive edition of the collected works of Philip Roth, published by special arrangement with the author, the range and inventiveness of Roth’s fiction is dazzlingly displayed in four extraordinarily diverse works.
